Schönefeld used to be the former central airport of the GDR and is now supposed to be converted into the Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, BBI. The airports of Tegel and Tempelhof are gradually planned to be shut down.

The new international airport BBI will offer businessmen, tourists and companies a high-tech airport on the outskirts of the capital with optimal connections, international flights, freeway annex and an ICE train station directly under terminal 17. The airport-express will cover the 20 km stretch into the heart of Berlin in less than 17 minutes. Appealing for the passengers and good for the area.

Nowadays, the airport is prefered especially by Low-Cost-Carriers such as easyJet or Ryanair.
